No Escape is a 2015 American action thriller film directed by John Erick Dowdle, who co-wrote the screenplay with his brother, Drew Dowdle. The film stars Owen Wilson, Lake Bell, and Pierce Brosnan, and tells the story of an American expat engineer trapped with his family in a fictional South East Asian country during a violent uprising. The movie was filmed in Thailand in the Chiang Mai and Lampang tourist-friendly North regions, and while the country's name was not explicitly stated, they used the Khmer script as well as a mention to Kampuchea Krom, implying that the film might take place in a fictionalized version of Cambodia, although the script was written upside down, in order to avoid implying that Cambodia was possibly the country in question. The only country mentioned in the film, as a safe haven, is Vietnam. The film was subsequently banned in Cambodia; it also received mixed to negative reviews from critics. The film was released on August 26, 2015, by The Weinstein Company. It had special sneak previews in the Philippines on August 16 and 17, 2015, as well as multiple pre-screenings throughout the United States before its official release.
